Grape Varieties
At Bad Armadillo Vineyard, we can not grow the same varieties of grapes that they do in California's Napa Valley. We can't grow a Chardonnay grape, a Merlot grape, or a Viognier grape. After a few years, the vines die - due to Pierce's Disease. In Florida, we have to grow varieties that are resistant to Pierce's Disease. Muscadine grapes, which are native to Florida, are naturally resistant to Pierce's Disease, while most Bunch grapes are not. The University of Florida has developed several varieties of bunch grapes that grow well in the South, and are resistant to Pierce's Disease. Some of these varieties that we grow, include Blanc du Bois, Conquistador, Lake Emerald, Suwannee, Black Spanish (also known as Lenoir), Favorite (a daughter of Black Spanish), and Stover. The Muscadine varieties include Noble, and Carlos, which are good for making wine.

We also grow a North American variety known as Norton (or Cynthiana).
